When Should You See a Sports Medicine Doctor for Persistent Joint or Tendon Pain?

regenerative medicine & pain doctor for Lake Oswego & greater portland

Joint or tendon pain does not always mean something serious is wrong. Temporary soreness after a new activity, an intense workout, or an increase in training may sometimes improve with reasonable rest and activity modification.

But when discomfort persists, repeatedly returns, or begins interfering with the activities that matter to you, it may be time to look more closely at what is causing it.

A sports medicine evaluation can help clarify the underlying musculoskeletal problem and determine what next steps make sense. At Maple Medical, the approach is condition first and treatment second. Care is built around your diagnosis, symptoms, history, previous treatment, activity demands, imaging, and individual goals rather than beginning with a predetermined procedure.

Sports Medicine Is Not Just for Competitive Athletes

The term sports medicine can make it sound as though you need to be a competitive athlete to see a sports medicine physician.

In reality, sports medicine focuses more broadly on musculoskeletal health, movement, function, and activity.

Persistent joint or tendon problems can affect people with many different lifestyles. You might be trying to return to recreational sports, stay active with your family, perform physical work, maintain an exercise routine, or simply move through everyday life more comfortably.

What matters is not whether you consider yourself an athlete. The more important question is whether a musculoskeletal problem is interfering with your function, activity, or quality of life.

When Should Persistent Pain Be Evaluated?

There is no universal number of days or weeks after which every joint or tendon problem requires the same type of evaluation.

The cause, severity, progression, and effect on function all matter.

Several situations may suggest that a more focused evaluation is worth considering.

Your Symptoms Keep Returning

Rest may help your knee, shoulder, hip, or tendon feel better temporarily, only for the discomfort to return when you resume your usual activity.

Recurring symptoms may be a sign that reducing activity has helped settle irritation without fully addressing the underlying problem.

A sports medicine evaluation can help investigate why symptoms continue returning rather than simply repeating cycles of rest and recurrence.

Pain Is Changing What You Can Do

Persistent discomfort becomes especially important when it begins changing your function.

You may start avoiding stairs, modifying workouts, changing how you walk, limiting recreational activities, or compensating during daily movements.

These changes can provide useful information during an evaluation. The goal is not simply to assign a pain score but to understand how the problem affects your movement and what you want to be able to do.

You Have Ongoing Stiffness, Weakness, or Limited Movement

Pain is not the only reason someone may seek sports medicine care.

Persistent stiffness, weakness, reduced range of motion, or difficulty performing particular movements may also warrant evaluation.

These symptoms can have different causes, which is why understanding the underlying condition is important before deciding what treatment may be appropriate.

Progress Has Stalled

Some patients seek another evaluation after already trying activity modification, medication, rehabilitation, injections, or another approach.

That does not automatically mean the previous treatment was inappropriate. It may mean the current diagnosis, rehabilitation strategy, condition, or treatment plan deserves another look.

Maple Medical can coordinate care with outside physical therapists or a patient’s existing therapist when rehabilitation is part of the plan. This can help connect treatment with activity and recovery goals rather than treating each part of care separately.

When Persistent Tendon Pain Keeps Coming Back

Tendon problems can be frustrating because symptoms may improve temporarily and then return when activity increases.

A tendon injury can vary considerably in location, severity, duration, and underlying tissue changes. That makes it important to understand what is actually happening rather than assuming one approach will work for every tendon problem.

An evaluation may consider:

  • How the problem began
  • Which movements provoke symptoms
  • Previous rehabilitation
  • Activity demands
  • Changes in strength or function
  • How symptoms have changed over time

For selected tendon conditions, treatment options may extend beyond rest and rehabilitation. Candidacy for any procedure should depend on the specific diagnosis and clinical evaluation.

Why Diagnosis Should Come Before Treatment

Persistent joint or tendon pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Two people can both describe knee pain while having different underlying conditions. Shoulder pain may arise from different structures, and tendon symptoms can represent different types or stages of injury.

A musculoskeletal evaluation may consider:

  • How and when symptoms started
  • Where symptoms occur
  • Activities or movements that aggravate them
  • Previous injuries
  • Medical history
  • Treatments already attempted
  • Current activity demands
  • Functional limitations
  • Existing imaging
  • Personal goals

These details help guide the next step rather than fitting every patient into the same treatment pathway.

How Imaging Can Help With Diagnosis

Imaging may provide useful information, but it should be interpreted in the context of symptoms and the overall clinical evaluation.

Maple Medical may use diagnostic ultrasound when appropriate for selected musculoskeletal concerns. Ultrasound allows the physician to examine certain structures in real time and may also be used to improve precision during selected ultrasound-guided procedures.

If you already have MRI, X-ray, or CT imaging, those studies may also be reviewed when relevant. Maple Medical does not perform those MRI, X-ray, or CT studies in-house.

Not every evaluation requires new imaging or an immediate procedure. The goal is to gather the information needed to better understand the condition and make an informed treatment decision.

What If Rest or Rehabilitation Isn’t Enough?

When symptoms continue despite reasonable conservative care, the next step should depend on the diagnosis rather than simply how long the pain has lasted.

For some patients, modifying activity or adjusting rehabilitation may remain appropriate. Others may be candidates for additional non-surgical options.

Depending on the condition, clinical evaluation, history, and goals, options at Maple Medical may include:

These approaches are not interchangeable, and the presence of persistent pain alone does not establish candidacy.

PRP, for example, may be considered for selected musculoskeletal conditions after evaluation. It should not be viewed as a universal solution for joint or tendon pain or as a cure for osteoarthritis.

Similarly, minimally invasive tendon procedures or energy-based therapies may make sense for some patients and not for others.

Access to several treatment options should support individualized decision-making rather than create pressure to choose a procedure.

Not Everyone Needs Regenerative Medicine

Persistent joint or tendon pain does not automatically mean you need PRP, Cell Therapy: MFAT & BMAC, shockwave, EMTT, or another advanced treatment.

In some situations, coordinated rehabilitation, changes in activity, further evaluation, or another care pathway may make more sense.

Regenerative and non-surgical musculoskeletal treatments also should not be viewed as guaranteed alternatives to surgery or as categorically better than physical therapy, medication, injections, or other established treatments.

Different conditions and different patients require different approaches.

Realistic expectations and appropriate candidacy are important parts of treatment planning.

What Does an Individualized Treatment Plan Look Like?

A thoughtful treatment plan should connect the diagnosis with what the patient wants to accomplish.

For one patient, the priority might be returning to recreational running. Another may want to regain confidence performing physical work. Someone else may simply want to move more comfortably during daily activities.

Previous treatment, current function, medical history, activity demands, and personal preferences can all influence what happens next.

Care may also extend beyond a particular procedure through physical therapy coordination, activity guidance, follow-up, maintenance, and individualized recovery planning when appropriate.

Pay Attention to Changes in Function

You do not necessarily need to wait until joint or tendon pain becomes severe before seeking an evaluation. At the same time, persistent discomfort does not automatically mean you need an advanced procedure.

Consider how the problem is behaving:

  • Does it keep returning?
  • Is your movement becoming more limited?
  • Have you stopped doing activities that matter to you?
  • Has progress stalled despite reasonable attempts to address the problem?
  • Are weakness, stiffness, or functional changes continuing?

These questions can help you decide when a more focused musculoskeletal evaluation may be worthwhile.

Maple Medical was founded by a physician who is double board-certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine and focuses on personalized, non-surgical musculoskeletal care. The practice emphasizes understanding the condition before selecting treatment and building recommendations around each patient’s history, function, activity demands, previous care, and goals.

If persistent joint or tendon symptoms are limiting your movement or leaving you uncertain about your next step, contact Maple Medical to discuss whether an evaluation may be appropriate.

I have used Dr. Blatz several times since 2021 for knee, SI joint, and most recently for tears in my shoulder. I have had PRP with stem cell injections, shock wave and EMTT therapy. I live in SW Washington yet the drive to Lake Oswego is not a problem for me since I have full trust in Dr. Blatz's work. The team at Maple Medical is excellent in my opinion. Cole is responsive to every message- Annee is superb at shockwave therapy focusing on patient comfort yet accomplishing goals specific to therapy needs. Lexi also put me at ease with my procedure and works seamlessly with Dr. Blatz. I consider Dr. Blatz to be an important part of my medical care team along with his staff. In conversations with other people, I have heard various results about experiences in offices that would be closer to my area that provide these services. It has been my experience that Dr. Blatz spends the time with you to answer your questions even throughout the procedure! His knowledge of PRP and his love of his work is evident. I have had excellent results from Dr. Blatz and his team and will continue to use them if the need arises.

Dr. Blatz has given me the best chance to live my life pain free and with the ability to physically do the things I haven’t been able to. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind. I am grateful for all the information he provided when asked, from literature to detailed explanations. I felt so grateful to have found a provider for my condition who is such an expert in his field along with an attentive, caring bedside manner. His entire office staff is just as caring. They are all knowledgeable and excellent at what they do. The connections with each felt personal and the level of communication so reassuring.

I had a stem cell procedure done by Dr. Blatz on one of my knees. Long story short, I had a long history of degenerative issues. I had done lots of PT, am too young for certain other interventions, but it still continued to worsen. After the procedure done by Dr. Blatz, I was able to do simple things like sit and stand and walk on stairs with no pain in my knee (this was after having nearly 10 years of pain). Not only that, but he knew my goals of keeping up certain activities and I progressed back into those activities as he said I would. Having Dr. Blatz do that procedure was 100% the best decision. He and his staff also closely monitored my recovery and rehab. Also, at this point, I think I have interacted with everyone at his office. They are all great. His office is very responsive. He fit me in same day recently on very short notice for an unrelated new injury, and he got the MRI I needed very quickly and the appropriate referrals that I needed. Also, the shockwave treatment they do was great at reducing pain levels for me during recovery.

I’ve had a great experience with Maple Medical and Dr. Blatz. He is extremely thorough in his assessments and takes the time to really understand the root cause of injuries rather than just treating symptoms. I have used shockwave and EMTT treatments and have had excellent results for recovery and pain improvement. His knowledge, attention to detail, and personalized approach really stands out. Highly recommend for anyone looking for thoughtful, cutting-edge care focused on recovery and long-term healing.

I am a professional guitarist. I was unable to play guitar for 15 months due to an injury to my left wrist. I had seen many other doctors and therapists, from chiropractors to acupuncturists to orthopedic surgeons, and nobody could treat my wrist injury. I found Dr Blatz by searching for PRP therapy. He treated my wrist, and in 4 weeks the injury was healed. It's been 2-1/2 years now and I've been playing guitar regularly again all that time without pain. Dr Blatz restored my music career!

My experience with Maple Medical has been great. The front desk folks, Cole & Lexi, are uniformly helpful.......Dr Blatz has been a wonderful ally. He doesn't over-promise and is realistic in our conversations. He has explained that my condition is a stubborn one (Don't I know it!) but from the start told me he believed they could help me and they have. He also is very positive and good humored. The condition has been with me for years so you don't get overnight success and I have had to be patient and now am seeing positive results....... Annee is my clinician and performs the shockwave treatment. She has been very professional and approachable at the same time. Some days it's not a walk in the park but the discomfort is fleeting. For instance, I drive to and from my appointments with no problem and the condition is in my foot. Professional, smart, honest, people is a great place to start. I am now back walking at a pace and distances that is very satisfying and am encouraged that it will continue on a positive trajectory.

I had a torn meniscus, damaged MCL and a damaged ACL. Twelve weeks after my stem cell procedure , my knee is about 85% back to normal. I am able to play golf again and walk without pain. I am very happy with my decision to use Dr. Blatz and his team.
